Thurs. 5/10 Guerilla Grrl Bar This from the Austin Guerilla Grrls...... Alright, if you were one of the 150 or so grrls that came to the last "special event" at Mother Egan's, you know just how cool a roomful of lesbians can be -- even when it's standing room only...hell, especially when it's standing room only! And it's time to do it again. Where? Opal Divine's Freehouse 700 W. 6th St. -- next to Katz's Thursday May 10 -- 9:30-close The "roving lesbian bar" idea seems to be filling a niche here in town, and we're glad the word is spreading. If you wanna keep a good thing going, show up again this Thursday and bring a carload of your friends--particularly the ones who've grown old and cranky about there "never being a place to go out" (...you know the ones--the same friends who complain about never meeting anyone new.) Opal Divine's is basically a continuation of our pub theme, but a much roomier bar with a great upstairs patio -- a nice space, but better when it's filled with women...so spread the word! Thanks! And we'll see you Thurday night. --Austin Guerilla Grrls to subscribe e-mail eve_pettyjohn@hotmail.com

Stonewall Riots June 27, 1969, The day of Judy Garland's funeral, plainclothes police enter the Stonewall Inn, 53 Christopher Street, in New York's Greenwich Village. As was customary at the time, they intended to harass the gay patrons and close the bar temporarily for selling liquor without a license as a means of collecting fines and bribes. However, this night turns out markedly different from all other bar raids: The patrons, many of them Third World drag queens and butch lesbians, fight back against the harassment. According to some sources, the first blow of resistance is made by a lesbian. The melee spreads into three days of intermittent rioting, now known as the Stonewall Riots. This event is generally regarded as the beginning of gay resistance to oppression. Some of the participants in the riots become gay activists and travel the country; one of them, a Yippie named Jim Fouratt, comes to Austin in 1970 and visits with local gays.
